Park Overview
Set high on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River, Untermyer Park bears the remnants of what had been an elegant estate.
Trail Overview
The major trail is a wide woods road from the left entrance of the parking lot. It passes a stone gazebo which was built for the wedding of Untermyer’s daughter. After a switchback downhill, the trail ends at the stone pillars at the Old Croton Aqueduct in 0.8 mile. It is 0.6 mile north on the Aqueduct to Lenoir Preserve.
A broad stone staircase leads down from the gardens toward the river. The staircase and gazebo offer settings where your imagination can run wild. Plan your walk so that you can picnic and attend Untermeyer Performing Arts Council events during summer months. The gardens are handicapped accessible.
Park Description
The mansion is long-gone, but the Untermyer Park offers visitors a stroll through Grecian Gardens of a Beaux Arts landscape design. The Untermyer Estate was known as Greystone when it was built in 1892 by John T. Waring, industrialist and philanthropist. The second owner was Samuel J. Tilden and the third owner, Samuel Untermyer, a lawyer, lived there for over 40 years. He bequeathed the estate in 1946 to Yonkers to be a public park. The original villa was located at the current site of St. John’s Riverside Hospital.
