National Trails Day: Intro to Compass & Land Navigation

Learn how to navigate a hike, avoid getting lost, and how to get back on trail using a compass.

This course teach the basics of land navigation skills including blaze, map and compass use. Participants will gain the ability to understand blazes and contour lines as well as understand triangulation and how to orient a map.

Meet our expert from Campmor

Steve Caldwell works at Campmor and has been outfitting hikers and explorers for 30 years. Steve has extensive backpacking and hiking experience since the early 1970’s. He has hiked canyons of the South West and the Rockies in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah as well as the prairies of Eastern Wyoming. He has completed 2 end to end hikes of the Northville Lake Placid Trail and has completed 1,000 miles of the Appalachian Trail.
